6OZ SIMPLE SYRUP3 oz sugar + 3 oz water
4TSP RIM SUGAR≈ 1.3 tbsp

Per shot: 1.5 oz vodka · 0.5 oz fresh lemon · 0.5 oz simple syrup. Lemon yield estimated at 1.25 oz per lemon.

2. The Kit

The bare minimum for proper lemon drops — no gimmicks:

  1. Boston shaker — glass-on-tin. Cracks ice cold, strains clean.
  2. Double jigger — 1.5 oz / 0.75 oz sides. Free-pouring shots is how good parties go bad.
  3. 4–8 shot glasses — chilled in the freezer for 30 min before pouring.
  4. Citrus press — fresh lemon juice or nothing. Bottled juice is the #1 killer of this drink.
  5. Fine mesh strainer — catches pulp and ice shards for that clean, candy-smooth finish.
  6. Sugar rimmer (or a saucer) — for the signature sugared rim.
  7. Rubber bar mat — the mixing-zone workhorse: catches drips, keeps glasses from sliding, makes the bar look pro.

3. The Recipe (Classic)

Vodka (citrus or neutral)1.5 oz
Fresh lemon juice0.5 oz
Simple syrup0.5 oz
Sugarfor the rim

Method

  1. Rub a lemon wedge around the rim of each shot glass; dip in sugar. Set aside.
  2. Add vodka, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker with a full scoop of ice.
  3. Shake hard for 12–15 seconds until the tin frosts over.
  4. Double-strain into the sugared glasses. Serve immediately, ice cold.

Upgrades: use Meyer lemons for a softer tart, or a drop of orange blossom water in the syrup for the "lemon drop candy" flavor.

4. Orders, Delivery & the 21+ Rules

Ordering vodka or the full kit for doorstep delivery? Every legitimate alcohol delivery service in the US runs the same legal gauntlet — know it before checkout:

RuleWhat actually happens
Age gate at orderYou certify 21+ on the site/app before browsing alcohol. This page's gate does the same.
ID check at the doorThe courier must scan a valid, physical government ID at delivery. Photos on a phone don't count. No ID, no handoff — no exceptions.
Signature requiredSomeone 21+ must sign. Leaving bottles on a porch is illegal in every state — the order returns to the store.
Third-party pickup banYou can't send your 19-year-old cousin. The person who signed is the person who must receive.
State-by-state availabilitySpirit delivery is legal in most states but restricted in some (a few allow only beer/wine). The checkout flow filters this for your address automatically.
Intoxication refusalCouriers can and do refuse visibly intoxicated recipients.

What this page's gate is — and isn't

The certification gate above is a client-side compliance checkpoint consistent with industry practice for alcohol content and affiliate pages. It is not a legal ID-verification system (that happens with a real ID scan at your door) and nothing here is legal advice. Delivery retailers are responsible for regulated sales; you're responsible for drinking legally and never driving after shots.

5. Why the Lemon Drop Shot Endures

The lemon drop is the gateway shot: it's essentially a candy that happens to be 40% ABV. Born in 1970s San Francisco — a sweeter, miniaturized descendant of Prohibition-era lemon cocktails — it survived every cocktail trend since because it does one thing perfectly: it tastes like dessert and hits like a proper drink.

Three rules keep it great. One: fresh lemon juice, always — the sour mix era is over. Two: serve it brutally cold; a warm lemon drop is a bad lemon. Three: the sugar rim isn't decoration, it's the first sip — drink it rim-first or not at all.

Scale it with the calculator above, batch the syrup ahead of time, and chill the glasses. Your only job at the party is shaking.
